My real question is why do people keep trying to fix things that aren't broken? If you don't have a
specific problem with your computer, you're better off leaving it alone.
In addition to the general atherosclerosis that Windows develops as it is used, every Windows Update adds more components that continue to slow down the system. For example, I had a number of 266 MHz / 64 MB RAM computers which were running adequately with Window 2000 SP2. By the time I got to SP4, I couldn't even log onto the network. But the same computer with 128 MB or a 400 MHz processor is functional.
I had a client who grew up in DOS doing significant backups on a couple of floppies. When she got Win95 with a 6 GB hard disc, she still couldn't resist just deleting files that she couldn't identify. Sure, you may have a lot of junk files or registry entries; but if you didn't create them, you're best off not touching them.
