Views From the Top

Richard Kinkel, President

I have the pleasure to welcome Patrick Rogers to the PCCC club's Board. Pat is an executive committee member and is our clubs new secretary. He told us the reason he was interested in becoming a board member was to give something back to the club, since he has been enjoying our club SIGS over the years. By the way if you haven't attended any of our fine SIGs I encourage you to do so now. You will be pleasantly impressed. The SIGs start the week after the general meeting. On Monday Bill Barnes does his MS Office SIG. I have attended several of his SIGs and it's like taking an expensive course, except you don't have to pay anything, except the cost of membership which is only $15. Bill is an MS Office professional and charges for his MS Office services. By attending his SIG you really get your money's worth.

Tuesday I do the Digital Photography SIG. I've been a commercial photographer since 1976 and charge big bucks for my services. Ask my clients and they will agree. But you get to share my photography secrets just for the cost of membership.

Thursday, Dr. Paul Reiss does the internet SIG. Paul is witty and always has something really cool to share with you. Check out his SIG, you'll find it entertaining. Plus Paul is friendly, and has a great sense of humor. He also has an endless supply of jokes. Go to one of his SIGs, you'll learn something I promise.

Well that about raps it up. I do want to say one thing though. At the last board meeting, we had record attendance and literally filled the room with club and board members. What energy and what talent our club has. And I want to let everyone know how thankful to be part of this organization. See you at the next meeting.

I am going to keep this short this month as Pam & I are heading out on Thursday Night for Florida for a long week. I did want to say a few words about last months and this month's General Meeting.

Last month Galen Bolen presented a great program on, "Putting Music on CD from Your Computer". I have been there for several of Galen's presentations over my time in the Club and this one was excellent as always. Thanx Galen. The link in Web Potpourri is to a page that has the software Galen talked about and demonstrated. If you want it just click on the link.

This month, and I am sorry Pam and I will miss it, is why upgrade to Office 2003 presented by our own Bill Barnes, VP PCCC. Bill, like Galen, is always entertaining and informative. If you have any friends at work who work in MS Office please invite them along next Thursday. I am sure they will glad they came.

This months eBytes and Bits is going to be a little slim partially because of my time but also because of a lack of articles from the members. I have been saying this for Three Years now I would love to have articles from the members. I have a faithful few but anyone could write an article on something you have done with your computer or to your computer or an interesting site you found. Think about it and send me one next month.

Well it's time to get packing, literally. See you next month.

GOTCHA
Bill Barnes, PCCC

We just bought a new projector for our new conference room. The company has a national contract with Dell, all the computers are Dells, and I generally like Dell. So, I ordered a Dell XGA projector.

This new projector has many more bells and whistles than are necessary for simple fixed conference room use including light weight with a nice carrying case; inputs for VGA, RGB, and composite video among others. We probably wouldn't use those features, but that's what you get for the base price.

I was testing it out and plugged my Dell laptop into the projector. It took some fiddling, but soon enough I had a picture and focused it on the wall where we had a screen on order. The first actual use of the projector would be on my day off, so I tested it again the day before. Although the lamp was on, I couldn't seem to be able to transfer the image from my laptop to the projector. I carried the laptop back to my desk and plugged it into a monitor, hit Fn-F8 so I knew I was getting signal out the video port, and then plugged it into the projector. No problems.

Next day, I get a call at home from the office manager who's setting up for the honchos that he can't get anything through to the projector. I relate the procedure I used to verify output from the laptop, tell him where the spare monitor is in my office and the presentation goes on.

When I get back, I start experimenting. Apparently the Dell laptop is so smart that it looks at the VGA port and if there's no monitor attached says, "Uh-un, even though he's asking me to send a signal out, I'm not going to waste the power for the port if there's nothing there." Meanwhile, the projector is cycling through a half dozen possible inputs, looking at the VGA for only a couple seconds at a time before moving on. If you don't transfer the laptop to the external monitor at the right moment, the two (Dell) devices won't see each other and won't lock onto the connection.

You all check the forum on the club website every week, don't you. You've never been to the forum? Shame. You didn't know the club had a website? Just click the "Go To Forum" link at the bottom of the page.

I won't quote the messages here, but will tell you some topics you're missing out on. We have conferences on "Help Desk", "Service Project", "Board Discussions", the "Web Design/HTML" SIG, and "General Discussion".

At the Help Desk you can ask technical questions and get answers from others in the club or cyberspace who may have some knowledge on your topic. Recent questions range from not seeing emailed pictures and how to empty the Temp folder to a problem with a .DLL for a specific professional program. Not all of these got a resolution, but they opened discussion.

The Service Project is a place to see immediate updates on our project to recondition computers.

Board Discussions allows you to watch over and join in the Board's deliberations between the monthly Board dinner. Recently there's been an opportunity to put your two cents' into a lively debate over the adjustment of our dues.

If there's demand, each SIG can have a place to cover topics of specific interest. Right now, Dewey is soliciting ideas for what we want to cover in his Web Design/HTML SIG.

General Discussion lets you talk about anything computer. Suggest a program topic (if you want to present one, please contact board@pc3.org directly). Unload, or look for some old equipment. Confess the location of the WMDs. Just about any topic is welcome here.

If you can't find the forum from PC3.org, just click the link below. We're waiting to respond (we don't promise an answer) to your questions, hear (we don't promise to listen) your gripes or plaudits, or consider your for sale. If you come back frequently, and we hope you all do, please register (click "User") so we can honor your insightful writing.
