Views From the Top

Richard Kinkel, President

It's Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and it's time for another View's from the Top. We have a lot to be thankful for. For me I'm thankful for computers and how they make are life more efficient. Plus I think they are amazing. Two weeks ago my girlfriend bought a lap top. She wanted me to hook up a wireless network from a router. For some reason, I always had a mental block about networking. To make a long story short and through the help of customer support and several hours of hard work I got the router and the wireless network up and going. We both think it's amazing. She can take the laptop any where around the house and go online while I'm on the computer, it's so cool.

Now for club business:
(1) if you're going to the Christmas Party, send Pam Wales, treasurer@pc3.org an email before Monday morning, December 6. We need to know how many dinners to order as soon as possible. The Christmas Party is a fun event, and we have lots of door prizes, one of the prizes being, Office Professional 2003. Check out the newsletter for details.
(2) THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS VERY IMPORTANT: In the last newsletter we mentioned a format change. After much reflection and input from several board members and input from the membership in general here are the final plans.
A. We are not going to do away with the general meeting. The general meetings will still be the 2nd Thursday of each month at PNG. Our plans are to aggressively search for a program chair (any takers?) and strengthen the club's monthly programs.
B. Instead of having all of our SIGs the week after the general meeting, we will schedule the SIGs more evenly during the course of a month.
Here is the new schedule, please make a note of these changes.

WEB DESIGN SIG 1st Wednesday of each month.

OFFICE SIG 3rd Monday of each month.

INTERNET SIG 3rd Thursday of each month.

DIGITAL CAMERA SIG 4th Thursday of each month.

BOARD MEETING 4th Monday of each month.

Of course the GENERAL MEETING will be the 2nd Thursday of each month @ PNG, and the SIGs will still be held at CompUSA. The purpose of these changes is to allow more people to attend the SIGs. A lot of people, including myself don't want to go to 4 SIGs during a one week period.

So, I hope to see all of you at the Christmas Party and I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. See you soon.

Protect Internet Explorer without SP2
Excerpt of Original Article by Paul Thurrott
Captured from the internet by Dr. Paul I. Reiss

To defend your PC against unwanted pop-ups and other security threats that propagate on the Internet, your best bet is to install a Web browser other than Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE). Brian and I recommend the excellent Mozilla Firefox which has been the subject of previous columns by both myself and Brian. We'll have a complete review of Firefox in the Windows Secrets Newsletter after the 1.0 Gold version of the new browser is released, which is expected on Nov. 9. But many PC users find themselves chained to IE. Chief among the reasons for this is that certain sites - especially Windows Update and several online banking sites - have been foolishly programmed to work only with IE.

If that's your situation, let's see what we can do to better secure IE. In this article, we'll focus on blocking pop-up windows, which are not only irritating but can expose your PC to unwanted downloads.

No IE security fixes for non-XP users Microsoft has publicly stated that the new IE security features found in XP Service Pack 2 - such as its Pop- up Blocker and the elimination of "drive-by downloads" - will not be made available to IE users running Windows versions other than XP. This includes users of Windows 2000, 9x, and Me.

As partial compensation for the lack of pop-up blocking in IE, Microsoft released some time ago the MSN Toolbar in addition to a pop-up blocker, however, this toolbar includes several extraneous Microsoft-specific links to such things as MSN Messenger, Hotmail.com, and MSN Search, which aren't wanted by most people.

As a result, many Windows users have installed the free Google Toolbar. This utility (for IE 5.0 and higher) offers access to the search functionality of Google, rather than MSN, and sports its own pop-up blocker (for IE 5.5 and higher). While Google's toolbar is fine, Google aficionados may prefer the Alexa Toolbar (link), a service of Amazon.com. Besides including a Google input box and a pop-up blocker, the Alexa utility also can suggest related links and help you search the Wayback Machine, a huge repository of billions of Web pages as they looked in the past, some as far back as 1996.
