Next PC3 General Meeting
Thursday, August 12, 2004
Piedmont Natural Gas Building
6:45PM to 9:00PM
August Program
Questions & Answers
Views From the Top
Richard Kinkel, President
Here it is Friday afternoon at 3:00 PM and I just started views from
the top. The point is its Friday and I'm still working. I hope everyone
is enjoying the economic benefits of this recovery. As a self employed
person, I like to wind down on Fridays but today I'm working, and I have
to work this weekend; all because of my compute skills. Aren't computers
wonderful?
Now it's time for some club business. For the next General meeting we
will have a question and answer panel. This panel will be headed by
Dewey Williams who is an IT professional. So come prepared to get those
tough computer questions answered. In fact, if you would like bring your
computer, we'll try to fix it during the meeting. You know lap tops are
easier to bring than desktops, but if you want to bring a monitor and
your desktop, it's ok with me.
I also want to plug the SIGS. The SIGS occur the week after the
general meeting. Monday, is Bill's SIG on MS Office, Tuesday is my
Digital Photography SIG, Wednesday is a new SIG on Web Site Development
by Dewey Williams, and Thursday Paul does the internet SIG. You have to
be a member to attend these SIGS but membership is only $15 per year.
That's a great deal in my book.
Well let me get back to work, and I'll see you at the next general
meeting. Happy Computing.

Here we are in August already it only seems like yesterday
that it was the March elections and cold weather. Speaking of
cold weather, Mark Your Calendars for DECEMBER 9th. That
is the date of the PCCC Annual Holiday Party. We have reserved
the same room at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. You will be
hearing more about it as the time draws near.
This month the meeting will be our Annual Q&A session so
bring in your questions for the experts in our group. This is
the meeting when they can take the time to really answer your
questions.
Well enough for this month hope to see you at the meeting.

Get your piece of $89,194,765 from the company we love
to hate.
If you purchased certain Windows, MS-DOS, Office, Word, or
Excel products from a non-Microsoft vendor (that is, it came
pre- installed on your computer or you bought at retail) for use
in North Carolina between December 9, 1995 and December 31,
2002, you may be eligible for vouchers for future purchases. You
can file a claim on up to 5 items without having to provide a
proof-of-purchase. For more claims, you will have to come up
with a product ID or CD Key for each piece of software.
To download a claim form, use "More Info" below
Using Internet Explorer click the link on the left for
"Claim Forms". Go ahead, procrastinate. That just
means my piece of the pie will be a little bigger.

PayPal class action settlement PayPal has also
announced a settlement for a class that includes everyone who
opened a PayPal account from October 1, 1999 through January 31,
2004. If you have a PayPal account from that time you're
entitled to a share of $9.25 million. There are three classes of
claimants: Statutory Damage Fund Claimants who opened an
account in that time. Short Form Claimants who had an
unauthorized transaction on their account, even if it's been
rectified. Long Form Claimants if you were injured and
are willing to fill out a more complex form.
How much will you get?
The Statutory Damage Fund is $1 million to be divided among
all who file a claim. Short Fund Claimants will get $50 each
(until the fund is depleted). Long Form Claimants will share the
remainder. But first, the lawyers will get approximately $3.5
million. This leaves about $4.3 million to be divided among the
Short and Long Form Claimants.
Go here to file your claim: https://www.paypal.com/settlement.
Get your claim in by October 23, 2004!
SETI goes BOINCers Seti@Home has introduced a new client
to churn your computer while you sleep. You can transition to
the new program at http://setiathome.berkeley.edu or http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu
or you can stay with Seti Classic for a while.
Once you're signed up, go back to http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu
and customize YOUR ACCOUNT. Under GENERAL PREFERENCES, you can
control how much of your computer it takes up. Go to SETI@HOME
PREFERENCES to choose a screensaver and whether details of your
individual computers show up in the listings.
Then go to http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=32615
and watch how we're doing. If you're not one of our team, please
join us now; we're identified as PCCC.
--- Some tips on configurations:
They're still working bugs out of the system. I've been
caught without data for about 1/3 of my computational time. You
might want to choose a larger download quantity in your
preferences. They collect a lot of detail about your computer(s).
Think about hiding your computers under SETI@HOME PREFERENCES.
